What is the best vegan cheese? Here are some of the tastiest options!

Updated: Jan 5

Dairy-free cheese has come a long way in the last couple of years. Gone are the days when you tried to melt it, and its rubbery form disappointingly refused to budge.

Now we can enjoy and serve up a proper vegan cheese-based meal or board with mozzarella, parmesan, soft cheese, and even bleu (yes, really)!

If you miss cheese, here are some of the best vegan cheeses available in the US to satisfy those cravings.

FOLLOW YOUR HEART SHREDDED MOZZARELLA

On the hunt for the perfect vegan shredded cheese to top your homemade pizza? We know this is one of the biggest barriers people face when going dairy-free, but Follow Your Heart’s dairy-free mozzarella is an absolute game-changer.

It’s smooth, creamy, melts well, and is flavorful, making this an unforgettable cheese. Try the cheddar flavor for your nachos and baked potatoes too!

Available at most US supermarkets.

VIOLIFE JUST LIKE PARMESAN

No spaghetti Bolognese or carbonara would be the same without a generous sprinkling of grated Parmesan.

And thanks to Violife, we vegans don’t have to miss out, as their Just Like Parmesan vegan cheese wedge is an amazing coconut-based alternative with added Vitamin B12. So, it’s basically a health food when you think about it.

Available at some US supermarkets or health food stores.

MIYOKO’S CREAMERY CASHEW MILK ARTISAN CHEESE WHEELS

Miyoko’s artisan cheese wheels will be the star of any vegan charcuterie board!

We recommend the Sharp English Farmhouse and French Style Winter Truffle for starters. But no matter the flavor you pick, you’re in good hands as Miyoko’s has mastered vegan artisanal cheeses.

Available at most US supermarkets.

DAIYA AMERICAN STYLE SLICES

Daiya very well may be the most widely available vegan cheese in the US — and for good reason! We highly recommend their American Style slices for a delicious and nostalgic vegan grilled cheese the whole family will love.

Or, add a slice (or two) to take your veggie burgers to the next level!

Available at most US supermarkets.

FIELD ROAST CHAO CREAMY ORIGINAL BLOCK

Chao’s Creamy Original is almost a flavor of its own, making it incredibly versatile.

Cube it to add to your vegan charcuterie board, shred it as a tasty finishing touch to any salad, or melt it down to make a rich and creamy fondue or mac and cheese. Whatever you end up using it for, you won’t be disappointed!

Available at some US supermarkets and health food stores.

KITE HILL CREAM CHEESE SPREAD

Our East Coast friends will likely agree that we had to add vegan cream cheese to our list!

Kite Hill makes a variety of almond milk-based vegan cream cheese flavors. Use Plain to accompany your vegan carrot lox, or indulge in the season with their Pumpkin Pie flavor!

Available at some US supermarkets and from their website.

RIND AGED FRENCH-STYLE BLEU CHEESE

Here’s another one for your vegan charcuterie board… or your salad, sandwich, or desserts!

RIND cheeses are a bit harder to come by, but their uncanny likeness to their non-vegan counterparts makes them well worth it. They’ll be your go-to for a satiating vegan bleu cheese fix!

Available from VeganEssentials.com and a few select retailers.

PARMELA CREAMERY SHARP CHEDDAR SLICES

If you’re looking for a delicious vegan cheddar cheese with a bit of a sharp kick, Parmela Creamery has you covered.

These plant-based sharp cheddar slices are aged for 60 days for extra flavor and make the perfect addition to any sandwich or wrap!

Available at Whole Foods Market and other US supermarkets.
